# Bergen County Academies Ranking for College Admissions

As a former admissions officer who regularly reviewed files from New Jersey, I can tell you this: when an application from Bergen County Academies (BCA) landed on our desks, we didn’t reach for the U.S. News ranking. We reached for the school profile.

The perception among many families is: “BCA is competitive, so admissions officers will know my kid is strong.” 

But that’s not exactly what it looks like in practice. At selective colleges, you're evaluated relative to your peers at your own school, not students from all schools across the country. And the bar at BCA is high, so let’s talk about what that means.

BCA has racked up just about every external accolade a public magnet school could earn:

- **Size & Structure**: ~1131 students across 7 specialized academies (AAST, ATCS, AMST, etc.)
- **Academic Standards**: All core classes are taught at honors level or higher; AP/IB coursework is integrated across academies
- **Internship & Research Model**: Weekly interdisciplinary research projects plus a yearlong senior internship worth 9 credits
- **No Class Rank**: GPA is unweighted
- **Course Offerings**: Deep bench of APs (including Calc BC+, Physics C, and Comp Sci A) and IB courses (HL/SL options across humanities, STEM, and languages)
- **College Matriculation Data**: Regular admits to MIT, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, and Ivies, and other selective colleges

Here’s a behind-the-scenes breakdown of how admissions offices tend to process applications:

When applications come in, AOs often start by grouping all students from the same school. For BCA, that’s a competitive bunch.

- **Step 1: GPA Sort** – Even though BCA doesn’t rank, officers estimate standing using a combination of GPA and rigor
