If you’re a parent in the Bay Area navigating high school decisions, you’ve probably heard it all. College matriculation rates. Teacher credentials. SAT scores. Sports and robotics. “Feeder” talk.

But when most families ask this question, what they’re usually asking is: Which private schools in the Bay Area give your student the best shot at a top college — *and* offer the right academic and personal foundation to get there?

## **What Makes a Private School Strong for Admissions?**

Colleges, especially the most selective ones don’t just look at an application in a vacuum. They evaluate students in context, meaning they compare applicants from the same high school against each other (in what’s called a "school group"—read more about them here). 

In most admissions offices, applications are grouped by high school and sorted by GPA. So when an admissions officer looks at your transcript and resume, they’re thinking about both in the context of your school peers.
